Though crime across the nation has reportedly fallen in the past year, safety weighs heavily on the minds of Americans. In fact, nearly two-thirds of Americans believe crime is “extremely or very serious,” according to a Gallup poll from October 2023.
But being insulated from crime is just one aspect of safety. In an analysis of the safest cities in the U.S., personal financial site WalletHub reviewed 182 cities based on metrics from three categories: financial safety, natural disaster risk, and home and community safety. Indicators in the analysis included everything from a city’s traffic fatalities per capita to its earthquake risk.
The analysis covers the 150 most populated U.S. cities in 2023, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state. Cities in New England dominated the top 10, with Vermont alone snagging two spots.
